QCI Recreation Newsletter

Issue 3

At QCI Rec. we are glad that the winter went by fast, weather speaking. Still, that means that we need to get ingenious now, and find ways to entertain the Islands with more outdoorsy pursuits for the upcoming spring and summer months.

Some ideas that have floated by the Rec. Coordinators’ desk are summer hikes for you and your family to enjoy, more kayaking classes, summer walking clubs, even swim lessons in one of our local lakes or protected harbours! We have also been thinking about the Harbours Days Biathlon and other community event ideas to put in motion. If you have an idea or class you want to offer to our Commission please email or call us!

We just finished having our QCI Rec. AGM on February 28th in Tlell at the Fire hall, and we are pleased with how many of you have registered and participated in our programs in 2008. It turns out that 578 people decided to participate in one, or two, of the fifty-eight programs we offered last year and 116 children participated in our Summer Program. We hired twenty-two local instructors and only one off island instructor in our regular programs and sponsored eighteen islanders in order for them to participate in our programs. We’ve tried out new programs like surfing and group music lessons as well as stayed with the tried and true art classes and aerobics. We hope that you continue to enjoy our programming!

Spring has not yet sprung and we are already talking about the summer! As for the remaining portion of winter and moving into spring we have some new programs coming up as well as a new movie for March.

Our March movie is called “Marley & Me” with Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. This is a PG rated movie about a young couple and a puppy entering into their lives creating havoc and love. Masset will see this movie March 27th and Queen Charlotte and Sandspit will get to view the movie on March 28th.

There are still ongoing drop in sports programs for your community at your local school gym just check our drop in page on this website. Your children can sign up for Youth Wrestling in Masset right now, and you can look forward to a lesson in the art of Hanging Baskets in Port Clements in April. Masset finally is able to experience the expertise of Stained Glass instructor, Ralph Schultz, at the end of March and Alternate Fitness is still going strong in Sandspit, Charlotte, Masset and Port Clements.
